Meaning
Horticulture comes from the Latin words "hortus" which means "garden" and "cultura" which means "cultivation." Protective enclosures with high walls or similar constructions surrounded the residences in ancient times. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, and decorative plants were grown in the enclosed spaces. As a result, "horticulture" in its original definition "refers to the growing of garden plants within enclosed enclosures."
Definition
Horticulture is defined as the science and art of growing, processing, and marketing fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, plantations, medicinal, and aromatic plants.
Branches of Horticulture
Horticulture may be divided into many branches depending upon the crops we are dealing with. branches of Horticulture are following.
- Pomology: Pomology is the branch of Horticulture or botany in which we studies about the fruits and practice of growing fruit.
- Oleroculture: deal with the cultivation of Vegitable.
- Floriculture : deal with cultivation of lower crops.
- Plantation Crops: Deal with the cultivation of plantaion crops for example coconut, arecanut, rubbber, Coffee, tea etc.
- Spices Crops deal with cultivation of crops like cardamom, pepper, nutme
- Medicinal and aromati crops : reffers to the cultivation of aromatics and meicinal plants
- Post harvest technology: it deal with the handling of crops after harvesting. it inclueds handling, grading, procesing, storage Marketing and value addition of Horticulture Crops
- plant propaation: it deal with the propagatio of horticulture plants.
Importance of Horticulture
in short, we can say horticulture provided us good quality food for health and mind, it provided high yields on per unit area and more calories per unit area,
horticulture crops had high returns per unit area, increased the value of land and increase the purchasing power for those who are engaged in the horticulture sector. Therefore horticulture is very important for both health and wealth.
